No one should go hungry in the United States. Yet 50 million individuals experienced food insecurity at some point during 2009. This means that they ate less than they needed, skipped meals, or even went a whole day without eating.

But you can help.

The USDA and the Corporation for National and Community Service have joined together to provide service opportunities to help end hunger in our country.

While government programs provide a nutrition safety net for millions of Americans, people are still hungry. Many of our most valuable resources in the fight against hunger lie within the individual communities where hunger is most prevalent. Providing volunteers to capable organizations will energize the fight to end hunger.

This is one reason why the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Corporation for National and Community Service have teamed up to help you find volunteer opportunities to fight hunger in your community. In addition, on Serve.gov, you can find out more about hunger in the U.S. and learn how to start your own project with toolkits.

Thanksgiving is a time to come together with family and friends to feast in good company. It is the one day a year reserved for expressing gratitude – for family and friends, health and careers, homes and means. But many Americans will not share in such plentiful abundance.

Many Americans struggle with poverty issues. According to the Census Bureau, 1 out of 6 Americans are living in poverty. In the Dallas-Fort Worth Metro Area, more than 14.6% of individuals live below the poverty line and statewide, 4.6 million Texans live in poverty, putting Texas 3% higher than the national average.
